Tatum to Utah Two-Package Test (Verified)

Date: 2026-05-17 Inputs: data/trades/tatum_utah_salary_inputs.csv Engine: scripts/trades/test_tatum_utah_two_packages.py Outputs: data/trades/tatum_utah_package_tests.csv Memo: reports/trades/tatum_utah_research_memo.md Supersedes: tatum_utah_two_package_test.SUPERSEDED.md

This report rests on three verified inputs: Boston's 2026-27 cap sheet (Spotrac apron tracker, Basketball-Reference), Utah's 2026-27 cap sheet (Spotrac, BBR, Wikipedia), and 2023 CBA matching mechanics (project-local cba-knowledge/ knowledge base). No claim of "legal trade" is made; the verdicts below are salary-plausibility checks, two-sided.

1. Executive verdict

Package B works in both pick-rights-only and signed-pick modes. Salary plausible on both sides, no apron breach.

Package A only works in three of seven tested modes, all of which require Walker Kessler signed to $25M+ AND the #2 pick signed before the trade, OR Kessler at $20M plus Konchar as filler. Pick-rights-only versions of Package A all fail Utah's matching: Utah cannot send enough salary out to legally take Tatum's $58.46M back without Kessler at $30M+ or major filler.

The trade is mechanically feasible. The constraint is Utah's matching, not Boston's apron. Boston has $21.27M of first-apron headroom going in; they have plenty of room to absorb either package. Utah's challenge is that Kessler is a restricted free agent with no 2026-27 contract today — every Package A variant requires negotiating his number first.

3. Salary assumptions (verified)

All headline numbers are Spotrac or BBR primary-source. Two estimates remain:

  • Kessler salary scenarios — RFA, no contract exists. Modeled at $20M, $25M, $30M (his public ask was ~$30M; Utah was reluctant; shoulder surgery 11/5/2025 likely compresses range).
  • 2026 #2 pick Y1 — calibrated to 2025 #2 Harper Y1 ($12,370,320 BBR) + cap growth. Estimate $12.99M ± $200K.

Everything else is from a primary source with HTML cached under data/raw/.

4. CBA / apron caveats (verified)

2026-27 thresholds (Spotrac apron pages):

  • Salary cap: $165,000,000
  • Luxury tax: ~$201,000,000
  • First apron: $209,000,000
  • Second apron: $222,000,000

Salary matching brackets (project-local cba-knowledge):

For teams below first apron taking back salary against outgoing > $29M: Max incoming = 125% × outgoing + $250,000

For teams at first apron: 100% (the 110% number commonly cited is a 2023-24 transition rule that has expired).

For teams at second apron: 100% AND no aggregation.

Tatum-specific math:

  • Tatum outgoing = $58,456,566.
  • Boston max incoming (125% + $250K) = $73,320,707.
  • Utah min outgoing to absorb Tatum = ($58,456,566 − $250,000) ÷ 1.25 = $46,565,253.

Hard-cap triggers:

  • Boston using the 125% expansion (taking back more than sending out) → hard cap at first apron $209M for the cap year.
  • Boston receiving via sign-and-trade → hard cap at first apron regardless.
  • Either way, post-trade Boston salary must stay below $209M.

Apron mechanics confirmed:

  • Boston is below first apron ($21.27M headroom). All matching brackets available.
  • Utah is below first apron ($66.84M headroom). All matching brackets available.
  • Neither team is constrained by the second-apron aggregation ban. Both can aggregate freely.
  • Pick rights count as cap hold but not as matching salary when traded on draft night. (CBA full text Article VII Section 8 — confirmed in project local sources.)

5. Package A — Kessler (RFA) + Ace Bailey + 2026 #2 pick

Boston sends Tatum ($58.46M). Boston receives package below. Kessler has no 2026-27 contract today, so every variant requires either an extension/new deal signed first, or a sign-and-trade (which hard-caps Boston at first apron).

kessler_30M_signed_pick$30MAce + signed #2$52.5M$52.5M$65.9MYES$181.8Mplausible

Read: Package A only works if (a) Kessler is signed to $25M+ AND the #2 pick is signed before the trade, or (b) Kessler at $20M is paired with additional Utah filler.

The pick-rights-only variants of Package A all fail because Utah's outgoing salary is too small to absorb Tatum back under the 125% expansion. Without a signed Kessler at meaningful money, Utah can't satisfy its matching obligation.

Other constraints on Package A:

  • Sign-and-trade hard-caps Boston at first apron. Post-trade Boston salary is well under $209M in every plausible variant ($177M-$182M).
  • The $30M Kessler scenario assumes Utah pays him essentially the supermax-adjacent number he asked for last fall — possible but politically expensive coming off labrum surgery.

6. Package B — Lauri Markkanen + Ace Bailey + 2026 #2 pick

ModeIncomingUTA outgoingUTA can absorbTatum fits Utah?BOS post-tradeHard cap?Verdict
pick_rights_onlyMark + Ace$55.6M$69.8MYES$184.9MNo (no expansion used)plausible
signed_#2_pickMark + Ace + signed #2$68.6M$86.0MYES$197.9MYes (BOS expansion → first apron)plausible, $11M apron headroom

Read: Package B works cleanly in both modes.

  • pick_rights_only: Markkanen + Ace = $55.63M outgoing from Utah. Tatum's $58.46M incoming fits Utah's 125% expansion ($69.8M max). Boston receives $55.63M against $58.46M out — taking back LESS than sending → no expansion needed → no hard cap. Post-trade Boston is at $184.9M, comfortably below tax.

  • signed_#2_pick: Adds $12.99M signed-pick salary. Utah's outgoing rises to $68.6M; can absorb up to $86M (Tatum fits easily). Boston's incoming $68.6M against outgoing $58.46M = 117.4% ratio — within 125% expansion cap ($73.3M max). Triggers Boston's first-apron hard cap. Post-trade Boston at $197.9M, with $11.1M headroom under first apron.

Both variants pass. The pick-rights-only structure is cleaner mechanically (no hard cap, more flexibility in-season), but signed-pick variant is also fine if both sides want the pick to convey as a signed rookie.

7. Pick-rights vs signed-rookie treatment

This was a primary uncertainty in the prior analysis; verification clarifies:

  • Pick rights: $0 matching salary, but the pick carries a Rookie Scale Cap Hold for cap-counting (CBA Article VII Section 8). Tradeable on draft night before signing.
  • Signed rookie: full Y1 rookie-scale salary contributes to matching (~$12.99M for 2026 #2).

For Package B: pick-rights mode avoids Boston's hard cap entirely. Signed-pick mode triggers the hard cap but still fits with $11M headroom. Either works.

For Package A: pick-rights mode FAILS Utah's matching at all tested Kessler salaries up to $30M. Signed-pick mode is required for Package A to work without additional filler.

Practical implication: the trade is best executed on draft night with pick rights still in play for Package B; for Package A the timing is more complex (Utah must sign Kessler and the #2 pick before the trade can match).

8. Salary filler needed

PackageModeFiller needed
A / kessler_20M_rights_only$20M Kessler + Ace + pick rights$17.0M of additional Utah outgoing
A / kessler_20M_signed_pick$20M Kessler + Ace + signed pick$4.0M of additional filler
A / kessler_20M + Konchar fillerworks as-is$0
A / kessler_25M_rights_only$25M Kessler + Ace + pick rights$12.0M of additional filler
A / kessler_25M_signed_pickworks as-is$0
A / kessler_30M_signed_pickworks as-is$0
B / pick_rights_onlyworks as-is$0
B / signed_#2_pickworks as-is$0

For Package A, the cleanest no-filler structure is Kessler at $25M+ with signed #2 pick.

9. Future pick demand

Comparable star trades 2024-2026 (Luka, JJJ, etc.) typically required 3+ unprotected firsts or top-protected firsts plus swaps in addition to headline pieces. Comparable trade data was not retrieved with citations this session — agent for that work was blocked. Recommendations below use general knowledge with explicit caveat.

For a healthy Tatum: 3-4 unprotected firsts plus 1-2 swaps in addition to the headline package.

For post-Achilles Tatum (the actual current case): 1-2 firsts plus 1 swap. The Game 7 knee miss is a further haircut.

Utah's outgoing pick capacity is constrained. Their own 2027 first plus the LAL 2027 first and PHX 2031 first all went to Memphis in the JJJ trade. By Stepien Rule, Utah cannot trade consecutive future firsts in 2027+2028. Utah can offer their own 2028, 2029, 2030 unprotected; CLE 2027 (heavily protected, from prior trade — partial verification); MIN 2029 (protected, from Gobert trade — partial verification). They cannot stack four unprotected without creative protection language.

Specific recommendation for Boston:

  • Package A (post-Achilles): demand Utah own 2028 unprotected + Utah own 2030 unprotected + 2 swaps.
  • Package B (post-Achilles): demand Utah own 2028 unprotected + 1 swap.
  • Package A (if healthy): demand 3 unprotected firsts + 2 swaps + add a young player (e.g., Keyonte George).
  • Package B (if healthy): demand 2 unprotected firsts + 1 swap.

10. Boston basketball fit

Package A (Kessler + Ace + #2):

  • Kessler is a drop-coverage rim anchor. Boston's defense was switch-heavy under Mazzulla. Scheme adjustment required.
  • Coming off labrum surgery — health is a real concern.
  • Ace Bailey is a wing scorer; fits Boston's wing-heavy build (Brown + White + Pritchard already in place).
  • #2 pick adds another high-upside prospect (likely Boozer, Dybantsa, or Peterson depending on draft order).
  • Brown becomes the alpha. Lineup is young, with one defensive anchor.
  • Coherent if Kessler is healthy. Risky if not.

Package B (Markkanen + Ace + #2):

  • Markkanen is a proven scoring forward. Spaces the floor, fits Boston's offensive read-and-react.
  • Markkanen + Brown is an elite offensive duo.
  • Defense at the 4 is a concern (Markkanen is not a stopper).
  • No rim protection acquired; Queta is the de facto starting center.
  • Ace + Markkanen overlap positionally.
  • More proven offensive output, weaker defensive identity.

11. Utah basketball / business fit

After Package A (Utah keeps Markkanen + JJJ, gives up Kessler + Ace + #2):

  • Starting 5: Keyonte / G / Tatum / Markkanen / JJJ.
  • Strong offensive star pairing (Tatum + Markkanen). Strong defensive pairing (Markkanen + JJJ at 4/5).
  • JJJ slides to 5 full-time without Kessler.
  • Three players over $46M (Tatum, JJJ, Markkanen). Total ~$154M for three. Plus Kessler S&T contract going out and a healthy fill of role players.
  • Win-now Western Conference contender.

After Package B (Utah keeps Kessler + JJJ, gives up Markkanen + Ace + #2):

  • Starting 5: Keyonte / G / wing / Tatum / JJJ (with Kessler as 5 backup or sub-in).
  • JJJ + Kessler is a redundant frontcourt — one of them plays out of position or comes off the bench.
  • Tatum becomes the entire offense. No second star.
  • Loses Markkanen, Utah's most established player and recognizable face.
  • Brand hit. Basketball downgrade on the offensive end despite Tatum.

Which is more realistic for Utah?

Package A is more realistic. Utah keeps Markkanen (their face), keeps positional balance (no JJJ/Kessler redundancy), gives up Kessler (RFA they were unwilling to extend at his ask), Ace (drafted last June, hasn't established yet), and the new #2 (an unknown). Package B requires giving up their established star to acquire a different star.

Cash-cow logic

Tatum as national-TV draw means more to Utah (small market, no top-10 player in recent history) than Boston (large market, recent champion, two stars). Utah's revenue from Tatum acquisition is materially larger than Boston's revenue loss from Tatum departure — provided Tatum returns to form. The Achilles haircut applies to both sides of this equation: if Tatum doesn't fully recover, Utah's cash-cow argument collapses.

12. Final recommendation

  1. Package B / pick_rights_only is the cleanest structure. Salary plausible on both sides, no Boston hard cap, executes on draft night. Boston gets a proven All-Star + a wing prospect + a top-2 pick.

  2. Package B / signed_#2_pick also works and gives Utah more time before the trade fires (does not require draft-night execution). Boston gets hard-capped at first apron but has $11M of headroom.

  3. Package A only works at Kessler $25M+ with signed pick, or Kessler $20M plus Konchar/similar filler. The Kessler RFA negotiation is the load-bearing variable. If Utah can't or won't sign him to $25M+, the trade requires layered filler — bloating both rosters.

  4. For a post-Achilles Tatum, Boston's future-pick demand is moderate. Package B + 1-2 Utah firsts + 1 swap is in range. Package A + 2-3 Utah firsts + 2 swaps would be needed if Boston wanted equivalent value, but Utah has limited outgoing pick capacity after the JJJ trade.

  5. Mechanically cleaner: Package B. Mechanically harder: Package A.

  6. Better for Boston: Package B. Markkanen is a known All-Star; Kessler is an injured RFA. Plus Package A bloats the roster with filler.

  7. More realistic for Utah: Package A. Utah keeps Markkanen (face of franchise) and positional balance. They lose Kessler (whom they wouldn't extend anyway), Ace (still unproven), and a draft pick.

  8. Strategically coherent: both work. Package B is "Boston gets best value, Utah gives up established star." Package A is "Boston gets prospect upside, Utah keeps established star."

  9. Franchise-reset character of either: Package B is closer to a franchise-reset for Boston (one star out, one star in, two prospects). Package A is more of a "Boston rebuilds around Brown + prospects."

  10. Tatum's cash-cow value favors Utah. Confirmed. Utah's national-TV draw and jersey/ticket revenue lift from Tatum is materially larger than Boston's revenue loss.

Categorical labels (per project standard)

  • "salary plausible" — Package B both modes; Package A kessler_25M_signed_pick, kessler_30M_signed_pick, kessler_20M+konchar_filler.
  • "salary not plausible without filler" — Package A pick-rights variants at any Kessler salary tested.
  • "value plausible if Achilles-discounted" — Package B with 1-2 future firsts; Package A with 2-3 future firsts.
  • "value insufficient if Tatum healthy" — both packages as drawn without additional future picks.
  • "strategically coherent" — Package B (for Boston), Package A (for Utah).
  • No "legal trade" claim is made. Verdicts are salary-plausibility under verified 2026-27 cap and CBA mechanics. Final legality depends on the cap year's official threshold release (NBA typically late June 2026), Kessler's negotiated salary, and the conformity of the trade call to CBA Article VII Section 8 as applied in real time.
