2026 #2 pick

  • Rights conveyance: $0 matching salary (CBA — unsigned picks are draft assets, not contracts).
  • Signed rookie Y1: ~$12,990,000 (calibrated to 2025 #2 Harper $12.37M).

3. Boston cap/apron assumptions

  • Pre-trade active: $187,730,180.
  • Tax line (2026-27): ~$201M. Boston is under tax by ~$13.27M.
  • First apron: $209M. Boston is under by $21.27M.
  • Second apron: $222M. Boston is under by $34.27M.

Matching for Tatum + White outgoing ($88,804,566):

  • 125% × $88.80M + $250K = $111,255,708 max incoming.

This is a very comfortable matching cap. The two-piece Boston outgoing massively expands their incoming room compared to Tatum alone ($73.32M).

4. Utah cap/apron assumptions

  • Pre-trade active: $142,158,790.
  • Far below tax and both aprons.
  • Matching for Markkanen + Ace + #2 outgoing:
    • Rights mode: outgoing $55.63M → max incoming $69.79M. Tatum $58.46M fits.
    • Signed mode: outgoing $68.62M → max incoming $86.02M. Tatum $58.46M fits.

5. Minnesota cap/apron assumptions

  • Pre-trade active: $190,387,866.
  • Tax line: ~$201M. Minnesota is under tax by ~$10.6M.
  • First apron: $209M. Minnesota is under by $16.9M.
  • Second apron: $222M. Minnesota is under by $29.9M.
  • Matching for Naz Reid outgoing ($23,275,862):
    • Outgoing is between $7.5M and $29M → bracket: outgoing + $7,500,000 + $250,000 = $31,025,862 max incoming.
    • White at $30,348,000 fits with $677,862 cushion.

Important: Minnesota is below the first apron and tax line. Standard non-apron matching rules apply. They CAN aggregate (relevant only if they add filler). They CAN receive a sign-and-trade (not relevant here, White is a regular trade).

6. Can Minnesota take Derrick White?

Yes — Naz Reid alone clears matching with $677K cushion. No filler needed for matching.

Apron impact for Minnesota after trade:

  • Post-trade salary: $190.39M − $23.28M + $30.35M = $197.46M.
  • Still under tax (~$201M) by $3.54M.
  • Still under first apron $209M by $11.54M.
  • Hard cap from expansion-rule trigger: Minnesota incoming ($30.35M) > outgoing ($23.28M) → uses expansion → hard-capped at first apron $209M for the cap year. Headroom: $11.54M. Works.

7. Is Naz Reid alone enough outgoing for White?

Yes. Confirmed math:

Min outgoingBracketMax incomingWhite $Fits?
Naz Reid $23,275,862 alone$7.5M–$29M: outgoing + $7.5M + $250K$31,025,862$30,348,000YES by $677.8K

Adding any second Minnesota piece (DiVincenzo, Phillips, etc.) is unnecessary for matching and would trigger an additional aggregation hard-cap layer.

8. Is filler needed?

No. All three teams clear matching with the headline pieces alone. No filler is required from any team. This is the cleanest three-team structure tested across the project.

9. Does #2 rights vs signed #2 change Boston math?

  • Rights mode: Boston incoming $78.91M < outgoing $88.80M → no expansion → no hard cap.
  • Signed mode: Boston incoming $91.90M > outgoing $88.80M → expansion used (3.5% over outgoing) → hard-capped at first apron $209M. Post-trade $190.83M, $18.17M cushion.

Both modes pass Boston matching. Signed mode triggers Boston's hard cap (manageable headroom).

For Utah: signed mode is mechanically easier (higher outgoing total), pick-rights mode also works.

For Minnesota: the #2 pick is not in their leg of the trade, so the pick mode doesn't affect Minnesota's match.

10. Is the structure worth modeling?

Yes — definitively. Initial computation shows:

  • All three teams pass matching in both pick-rights and signed-#2 modes.
  • No filler needed from any team.
  • Each team's apron position holds.
  • Boston gets the most valuable basketball return modeled across all trade scenarios in the project (Lauri + Ace + #2 + Naz Reid).

The question shifts from "can it happen?" to "is it worth Boston losing both Tatum AND White?"

11. Outstanding research uncertainties

  1. Minnesota's available outgoing first-round picks — they sent at least one 2026 first-round swap to Detroit in February 2026, and they owe NYK picks from the KAT trade (not enumerated in fetched sources). Minnesota's pick capacity for future Boston compensation is partially unverified.
  2. 2026 #2 pick exact rookie scale — still ~$12.99M estimate.
  3. Tatum's true post-Achilles trade value — Game 7 left-knee miss adds risk. Analyst benchmarks not retrieved.
  4. Whether Minnesota would actually do this trade — they're trying to compete around Edwards. Trading their best frontcourt scorer (Naz Reid) for a 30+ guard (White) is questionable for them basketball-wise unless they value White's playoff defense at a premium.
  5. Anthony Edwards' specific extension dollars — confirmed via BBR per year, but Wikipedia did not list the on-court contract terms.

12. Pre-build conclusion

The three-team structure works mechanically. The basketball value going to Boston is the strongest of any structure modeled. Future-pick demand should be significant because Boston is giving up two impact players.

Heading into the script with these scenarios:

  • Base Three-Team A: Tatum + White → Utah/Min for Lauri + Ace + Naz + #2 rights.
  • Base Three-Team B: same with signed #2.
  • Min adds filler variations (DiVincenzo, Phillips): unnecessary but tested for completeness.
  • No-Min comparison: Boston keeps White, takes Lauri + Ace + #2 alone (Package B from prior test) — confirm prior result.
  • Future pick demand recommendations integrated into output.

Script next.
