1. Executive verdict
The Lauri + Kessler + 2026 #2 pick package for Tatum is mechanically viable in multiple structures. The cleanest is:
A1: Boston sends Tatum alone. Boston receives Markkanen ($46.11M) + Walker Kessler S&T at $27M + 2026 #2 pick rights ($0 matching). Boston incoming $73,113,154 against max $73,320,708. Clears matching by $207,553. Boston post-trade $202.4M, $6.6M under first apron hard cap. Utah matching also clears.
The trade fits in two timing windows:
- July 2026 (S&T path) — A1, A3, A4, A5, A7, C1, C3, C4 all plausible. A1 is the tightest but cleanest.
- February 2027 (Bird-delayed path) — B2 (Tatum + Hauser, signed #2) and B4 (Tatum + Hauser + Pritchard, signed #2) plausible. The Bird path requires Boston to add Hauser at minimum because by Feb 2027 the #2 pick is on Utah's roster as a signed player.
The package is harder than Lauri + Ace + #2 (Package B in the prior test) because it includes a $27M Kessler instead of a $9.52M Ace. The matching cap is much tighter and the S&T-vs-Bird timing question is now binding.
The basketball value going to Boston is higher than any package previously modeled. Future-pick demand can be lighter.
2. Research memo summary
From lauri_kessler_2_tatum_research_memo.md and prior reports:
- Boston is below the tax line ($21.27M under first apron). Plenty of trade flexibility.
- Utah is far below all aprons ($66.84M under first apron).
- Tatum's $58.46M outgoing supports max incoming of $73.32M (125% + $250K, below first apron, > $29M bracket).
- Walker Kessler is RFA. Any inclusion requires either a sign-and-trade (4y max + option, 5% raises max, BYC applies) OR a Bird re-sign and delayed trade (must wait until 1/15/2027 because Y1 > 120% of prior salary).
- BYC on S&T Kessler at $27M = $13.5M outgoing for Utah matching.
- 2026 #2 pick is $0 matching as rights / ~$12.99M as signed rookie.
- S&T receipt hard-caps Boston at first apron $209M for the cap year.
3. Salary assumptions
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Tatum 2026-27 | $58,456,566 |
| Boston active 14 | $187,730,180 |
| Hauser | $10,848,215 |
| Pritchard | $7,767,857 |
| Markkanen | $46,113,154 |
| Kessler face (modeled) | $20M / $25M / $27M / $30M |
| Kessler BYC outgoing (S&T) | $10M / $12.5M / $13.5M / $15M |
| 2026 #2 pick rights | $0 matching |
| 2026 #2 pick signed | $12,990,000 |
| Utah active 13 | $142,158,790 |
| First apron 2026-27 | $209,000,000 |
| Matching: outgoing > $29M, below first apron | max incoming = 125% × outgoing + $250K |
4. Why this package is harder than Lauri + Ace + #2
Direct comparison:
| Component | Lauri + Ace + #2 (Pkg B) | Lauri + Kessler + #2 (this test) |
|---|---|---|
| Star incoming | Markkanen $46.11M | Markkanen $46.11M |
| Second piece | Ace $9.52M | Kessler $27M (face) |
| Pick | Up to $12.99M (signed) or $0 (rights) | Same |
| Boston incoming total (pick rights) | $55.63M | $73.11M |
| Boston incoming total (signed pick) | $68.62M | $86.10M |
| Boston max incoming (Tatum alone) | $73.32M | $73.32M |
| Tatum-alone pick-rights match | passes with $17.69M cushion | passes by $207K |
| Tatum-alone signed-#2 match | passes with $4.70M cushion | FAILS by $12.78M |
The Ace → Kessler swap adds $17.48M to Boston's incoming, eating almost the entire matching cushion. Tatum alone goes from comfortable to thread-the-needle. The signed-#2 mode flips from working to failing.
This forces the structural choice: either (a) accept pick rights only and live with a tight match, or (b) Boston adds Hauser or more to expand the matching cap.
5. July 2026 Kessler S&T path
S&T includes Kessler at $27M face / $13.5M BYC outgoing for Utah matching. Receipt hard-caps Boston at first apron.
| ID | Boston sends | Pick mode | BOS incoming | BOS max | BOS post | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | Tatum | rights | $73.11M | $73.32M | $202.4M | plausible (tightest) |
| A2 | Tatum | signed | $86.10M | $73.32M | n/a | FAILS BOS matching |
| A3 | Tatum + Hauser | rights | $73.11M | $86.88M | $191.5M | plausible |
| A4 | Tatum + Hauser | signed | $86.10M | $86.88M | $204.5M | plausible (tight to apron) |
| A5 | Tatum + Pritchard | rights | $73.11M | $83.03M | $194.6M | plausible |
| A6 | Tatum + Pritchard | signed | $86.10M | $83.03M | n/a | FAILS BOS matching |
| A7 | Tatum + Hauser + Pritchard | signed | $86.10M | $96.59M | $196.8M | plausible |
Read:
- A1 is the leanest package — Tatum out, no Boston filler, just barely fits.
- A4 is the cleanest signed-pick variant — Tatum + Hauser opens room for the signed #2, post-trade $204.5M is $4.5M under hard cap.
- A6 fails because Pritchard alone ($7.77M) doesn't add enough outgoing salary to fit a signed pick.
- A7 is feasible but Boston is shedding both Hauser and Pritchard plus Tatum — heavy outgoing.
6. February 2027 delayed Bird path
Utah signs Kessler 5y/$156.6M/8% raises via Bird in July 2026, holds him through fall and early winter. Trade fires at 2/2027 deadline (earliest legal date 1/15/2027). By then the 2026 #2 pick has been signed and is part of Utah's roster.
No BYC applies — Bird trade, not S&T. Kessler is full $27M outgoing for Utah matching. But this comes at a cost: the trade is delayed 7+ months, and the signed-#2 mode is essentially mandatory (the pick has been a signed rookie for half a season).
| ID | Boston sends | BOS incoming | BOS max | BOS post | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| B1 | Tatum | $86.10M | $73.32M | n/a | FAILS BOS matching |
| B2 | Tatum + Hauser | $86.10M | $86.88M | $204.5M | plausible |
| B3 | Tatum + Pritchard | $86.10M | $83.03M | n/a | FAILS BOS matching |
| B4 | Tatum + Hauser + Pritchard | $86.10M | $96.59M | $196.8M | plausible |
Read:
- B2 is the cleanest Feb 2027 path: Tatum + Hauser for Lauri + Kessler + signed #2.
- Tatum alone (B1) fails — by Feb 2027 the #2 is a signed contract, and Boston cannot fit $86.10M into the $73.32M cap with only Tatum out.
- Boston-side hard cap: triggered by expansion (incoming > outgoing), not by S&T (no S&T involved in Bird-delayed path). Same first-apron hard cap behavior. B2 post-trade $204.5M leaves $4.5M cushion.
Bird path adds risk Boston should price in: Kessler's $27M salary is locked on Utah's books between July 2026 and Feb 2027. If Kessler's labrum recovery doesn't hold, his trade value craters before the deal can fire. If Tatum's Achilles recovery has a setback, Utah may walk. Insurance is bilateral.
7. Lauri + Kessler only (no #2 in deal)
Tests whether the #2 pick can stay with Utah (or be traded elsewhere) while Boston still gets Lauri + Kessler.
| ID | Boston sends | Kessler type | BOS incoming | BOS max | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| C1 | Tatum | S&T | $73.11M | $73.32M | plausible |
| C2 | Tatum | Bird-delayed | $73.11M | $73.32M | plausible |
| C3 | Tatum + Hauser | S&T | $73.11M | $86.88M | plausible |
| C4 | Tatum + Pritchard | S&T | $73.11M | $83.03M | plausible |
All four plausible — but future-pick demand jumps materially because Boston no longer gets a top-2 draft asset in the deal. Boston should demand at least 2 unprotected Utah firsts plus a swap to make up the difference. The basketball case for stripping the pick out of the deal is weak unless Utah refuses to part with it.
8. Tatum-only vs Tatum-plus-salary
Direct comparison of Boston's outgoing:
| Boston outgoing | Total $ | Max incoming | Lauri + K$27M + #2 rights ($73.11M) fits? | Lauri + K$27M + signed #2 ($86.10M) fits? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tatum alone | $58.46M | $73.32M | YES (by $207K) | NO (short $12.78M) |
| Tatum + Pritchard | $66.22M | $82.99M | YES (by $9.88M) | NO (short $3.07M) |
| Tatum + Hauser | $69.30M | $86.88M | YES (by $13.77M) | YES (by $777K) |
| Tatum + Hauser + Pritchard | $77.07M | $96.59M | YES (by $23.48M) | YES (by $10.49M) |
Hauser is the minimum Boston add that unlocks the signed-#2 mode. Pritchard alone isn't enough — its outgoing addition is $7.77M but it only buys $9.71M of additional incoming room (× 1.25), short of the $12.99M signed-#2 cost.
9. #2 pick rights vs signed #2
Three takeaways:
-
Pick rights mode lets Tatum-only work. A1 is the only "Boston gives up just Tatum" scenario that fits. Requires draft-night execution before the #2 signs.
-
Signed-#2 mode forces Boston to add Hauser. Either July 2026 (A4) or February 2027 (B2). Pritchard alone is insufficient.
-
The Bird-delayed path is effectively signed-#2 only. By Feb 2027 the #2 pick has been a signed player for ~7 months. There's no realistic pick-rights mode in B path.
10. Kessler salary sensitivity (Path D)
Across $20M / $25M / $27M / $30M Kessler scenarios, all variations × pick modes × Boston-extras = 64 cells.
Key thresholds:
- At Kessler $20M: all sub-scenarios with Hauser added are plausible. Tatum-alone pick-rights works easily ($66.11M incoming vs $73.32M cap).
- At Kessler $25M: Tatum-alone pick-rights still works ($71.11M vs $73.32M). Adding Hauser opens signed-#2.
- At Kessler $27M: Tatum-alone pick-rights just barely works (already noted, $207K cushion). Hauser unlocks signed-#2.
- At Kessler $30M: Tatum-alone pick-rights FAILS ($76.11M > $73.32M). Boston must add Hauser or Pritchard to absorb a $30M Kessler.
For each Kessler price, S&T-path and Bird-path Boston-side math is essentially identical (Boston incoming depends on Kessler face, not BYC). Differences:
- S&T triggers Boston hard cap; Bird-delayed does not (unless Boston uses 125% expansion, which it does in all signed-#2 modes anyway).
- BYC only affects Utah's matching. Since Utah is far below any apron and Markkanen alone is $46.11M, Utah's matching almost never fails in this package.
11. Future pick demand
Tatum is a top-5 player when healthy. He had Achilles surgery 5/14/2025, returned 3/6/2026 with markedly reduced production (21.8 PPG, 41.1% FG, 32.9% 3P over 16 RS games) and missed Game 7 of the first round with left knee stiffness. The package has to account for both his value and his current risk profile.
Lauri + Kessler + signed #2 is the most basketball value Boston can extract in any structure tested across all reports:
- Lauri is a 25 PPG All-Star scorer with playoff experience.
- Kessler is an elite rim protector under team control (just signed long-term).
- The #2 pick is a top draft asset.
Compared to Lauri + Ace + #2: that package was strong, but Ace is a year-2 rookie whose ceiling is unknown. Kessler is a known-tier defensive anchor. Higher floor.
Future-pick demand baseline (assuming post-Achilles Tatum):
| Structure | Pick demand |
|---|---|
| Tatum alone for Lauri + Kessler + #2 rights (A1) | 1 unprotected Utah first + 1 swap |
| Tatum + Hauser for Lauri + Kessler + #2 rights (A3) | 1 unprotected first + 1 swap |
| Tatum + Hauser for Lauri + Kessler + signed #2 (A4 or B2) | 1-2 unprotected firsts + 1 swap |
| Tatum + Hauser + Pritchard for Lauri + Kessler + signed #2 (A7 or B4) | 2 unprotected firsts + 2 swaps (Boston paying more) |
| Lauri + Kessler only, no #2 in deal (C-paths) | 2-3 unprotected firsts + swap (replaces pick value) |
For a healthy Tatum, double these demands.
Utah's outgoing pick capacity is constrained — their own 2027 and 2031 PHX picks went to Memphis in the JJJ trade. Utah can offer their own 2028, 2029, 2030 unprotected, plus swaps.
12. Basketball fit
Boston after the trade (Path A4 / B2 example: Tatum + Hauser out, Lauri + Kessler + signed #2 in):
- Starting 5 candidate: Pritchard / White / Lauri / Brown / Kessler.
- Strengths: Brown remains alpha. Lauri-Brown offensive duo is elite. Kessler solves rim protection (Boston has lacked since Horford/Porzingis era). Signed #2 is a wing/forward upgrade as a developmental piece.
- Weaknesses: Hauser exits — loses 40%+ shooting depth on the wing. Lauri + Brown defensively at the 3/4 is mediocre. Kessler scheme fit is drop coverage, not switch — Mazzulla has to adapt.
- Cap path: post-trade $204.5M just under first apron. Hard-capped via expansion. No mid-level signing room. Stays competitive but inflexible.
Boston after A1 (Tatum out only, pick rights only):
- Loses Tatum, keeps everyone else including Hauser and Pritchard.
- Gets Lauri (star) + Kessler (anchor) + 2026 #2 pick draft asset.
- Largest possible roster retention; signed-#2 path closed (would need rights to convey draft night, pick signs as Utah's player and Boston flips to a Boston rookie via draft).
- Best for depth and continuity.
Boston after A7 / B4 (Tatum + Hauser + Pritchard out):
- Loses three rotation players including both depth scorers.
- Brown alone is the lead scorer for the second unit too.
- Roster is shallow and top-heavy: Brown, Lauri, Kessler, signed-#2, White, plus minimums and rookies.
- Costs too much for the same incoming package.
13. Utah business / basketball logic
Utah after sending Lauri + Kessler + #2:
- Lauri was the established face of franchise. Kessler is the just-signed defensive anchor (in this scenario). The #2 pick is a future star bet.
- Utah gives all three for Tatum.
- Remaining starters: Keyonte / wing / Tatum / JJJ-or-wing / vacancy at C.
- No second star next to Tatum. Markkanen was supposed to be that piece.
- No rim anchor. JJJ slides to 5 full-time, but the Kessler insurance is gone.
- No high draft pick going into 2026 development.
- Basketball outcome: Tatum + JJJ + Keyonte and lots of cap room.
This is the cliff edge for Utah's basketball case. Sending Lauri AND Kessler AND the #2 is "go all in on Tatum." If Tatum's Achilles holds and his game returns to 26-28 PPG / 8 RPG / 5 APG, Utah has a top-3-in-the-West core (Tatum + JJJ). If Tatum doesn't recover fully, Utah has gutted itself for a diminished star.
Business case is straightforward: Tatum is a national-TV brand and a top-5 jersey seller. Utah goes from regional draw to prime-time team. Revenue lift is real.
Realism assessment: This package is plausibly the maximum Utah would offer for Tatum, but only if they have very high conviction on the Achilles recovery. The Game 7 knee miss is the kind of secondary signal that should tap the brakes.
14. Final recommendation
-
The cleanest mechanical structure is A1: Tatum alone for Lauri + Kessler S&T + #2 pick rights, executed July 2026 on draft night before the rookie signs. Salary plausible by a $207K cushion. Boston post-trade $202.4M under first apron hard cap. No Boston filler required.
-
If signed #2 is required (i.e., the trade needs to fire after the rookie signing window opens), the cleanest is A4: Tatum + Hauser for Lauri + Kessler S&T + signed #2. Boston post-trade $204.5M, $4.5M apron cushion.
-
The cleanest Feb 2027 path is B2: Tatum + Hauser for Lauri + Kessler (Bird-resigned) + signed #2. No S&T hard cap from receipt mechanism, but expansion-trigger hard cap still applies (incoming > outgoing). Post-trade $204.5M, same as A4 essentially. Trade-off vs A4: Bird path gives Kessler a structurally better contract (8% raises, 5 years vs 5% raises, 4 years + option) but delays the trade and adds ~7 months of mutual-injury risk.
-
Best structure for Boston: A1 if pick-rights conveyance is acceptable, A4 otherwise. A1 preserves Hauser and Pritchard. A4 trades Hauser for a signed-#2 pick.
-
Most realistic structure for Utah: A4 or B2. Both end with Utah holding Tatum + JJJ + role players. The S&T path (A4) executes faster; the Bird path (B2) gives Kessler a better contract on the way out — which makes him easier to convince to re-sign in the first place.
-
Future pick demand: for post-Achilles Tatum, 1-2 unprotected Utah firsts plus 1 swap baseline. For healthy Tatum, 2-3 firsts plus 2 swaps. Utah's outgoing pick capacity is tight after the JJJ trade — own 2028, own 2029, own 2030 are the available unprotecteds.
-
This package is messier than Lauri + Ace + #2 (Package B). Lauri + Ace + #2 worked as a one-trade with no Boston filler and no Kessler structural questions. Lauri + Kessler + #2 needs the right structural permutation. The Lauri + Ace structure is cleaner mechanically; the Lauri + Kessler structure is stronger basketball-side.
-
Is this package worth Tatum? Mechanically yes. Value-side: Tatum is a top-5 healthy player on a 5-year supermax. Lauri + Kessler + #2 + 1 unprotected first + 1 swap approaches fair value for a post-Achilles Tatum with the Game 7 knee question. For a fully-healthy pre-injury Tatum it would not be enough — Boston should demand more future picks.
RealGM paragraph
Lauri + Kessler + the 2026 #2 pick is the strongest basketball return Utah can build for Tatum. The salary math works, but it is tight: with Kessler signed at $27M, Boston can absorb Lauri + Kessler + the #2 pick rights for Tatum alone with about $207K of room to spare under the 125% matching cap. Adding a signed #2 (rookie under contract) instead of pick rights breaks the match unless Boston adds Hauser. The sign-and-trade structure for Kessler (max 4 years guaranteed + option, 5% raises max) carries a Base Year Compensation penalty that cuts his outgoing salary in half for Utah's matching purposes, but Markkanen's $46M alone is enough that Utah's side never strains. Boston is hard-capped at the first apron the moment they receive the S&T return, but post-trade Boston salary lands around $202-204M, comfortably under the $209M apron. The alternative is to wait until February 2027: Utah re-signs Kessler at the user-proposed 5y/$156.6M/8%-raise Bird deal, holds him until the trade deadline, and sends him with full $27M outgoing salary (no BYC). That path delivers Kessler a better contract but locks both sides into a 7-month waiting game where another injury for either Tatum or Kessler tanks the deal. The cleanest is the July 2026 sign-and-trade with pick rights and Tatum-alone outgoing; the most fan-friendly is the Bird-delayed path with Boston adding Hauser; the most expensive is asking Boston to send Tatum + Hauser + Pritchard for marginal additional return. Boston should demand 1-2 unprotected Utah firsts plus a swap regardless of which path is chosen, given Utah's depleted pick capacity after the JJJ trade.
Direct answers to the questions
- Can Boston receive Lauri + Kessler + #2 for Tatum alone? Yes — with #2 as pick rights only. Tatum alone for Lauri + Kessler S&T + #2 rights clears matching by $207K. With signed #2, Tatum alone fails by $12.78M.
- Does it work in July 2026? Yes — via S&T (A1, A3, A4, A5, A7).
- Does it work at the February 2027 deadline? Yes — via Bird re-sign + delayed trade (B2, B4). Pre-condition: Boston must add at least Hauser (the signed #2 is essentially mandatory by then).
- Does Boston need to add Hauser, Pritchard, or both? Depends on structure. Tatum-alone works with pick rights. Hauser is required for signed-#2 mode. Pritchard alone is insufficient ($7.77M outgoing buys $9.71M extra cap room — short of $12.99M signed-pick cost).
- Does #2 need to be signed? No, pick rights work and are cleanest mechanically. But signed #2 is required if the trade fires after the rookie signing window (mid-July onward) or in the February 2027 deadline structure.
- Does Kessler need to be S&T or Bird re-signed and delayed? Either works. S&T fires July 2026 with BYC penalty (not binding here since Markkanen alone covers Utah matching). Bird re-sign at the user-proposed 5y/$156.6M/8% rate forces the trade to wait until 1/15/2027.
- Which structure is cleanest mechanically? A1 — Tatum alone for Lauri + Kessler S&T + #2 rights. No Boston filler, no Bird-delayed timing, fits matching.
- Best structure for Boston? A1 if pick-rights conveyance is acceptable. A4 (Tatum + Hauser, signed #2) if the trade has to fire after rookie signing.
- Realistic structure for Utah? A4 or B2. Both end with Tatum + JJJ + role players on Utah. A4 fires faster; B2 gives Kessler a better contract to convince him to re-sign in the first place.
- Future firsts/swaps: Post-Achilles Tatum baseline 1-2 unprotected Utah firsts + 1 swap. Healthy Tatum: 2-3 + 2 swaps. C-path (no #2 in deal): 2-3 firsts + 1 swap to replace pick value.
- Cleaner or messier than Lauri + Ace + #2? Messier mechanically — tighter matching, BYC/timing questions, Boston filler often required. Stronger basketball-side — Kessler is a known defensive anchor vs Ace's unproven ceiling.
- Worth Tatum? Plausible at fair value for post-Achilles Tatum if Utah adds 1-2 unprotected firsts. Insufficient for healthy Tatum without more future picks.
