This report tests whether a Walker Kessler 5y/$156.6M contract (Y1 $27.00M, 8% raises) enables a Kessler + Ace Bailey + 2026 #2 pick trade for Jayson Tatum, and what structure is required. CBA mechanics verified against project-local cba-knowledge/ files (2023 CBA full text Article VII Section 8, Larry Coon FAQ Q92, Q93, Q101).
1. Executive verdict
The user's proposed Kessler deal (5y/$156.6M, 8% raises) cannot be a sign-and-trade. Two binding CBA constraints:
- S&T contracts are capped at 4 years (+ option), not 5 fully-guaranteed seasons.
- S&T raises are capped at 5%, not 8%. Larry Coon Q92, Q94.
This forces a binary choice:
-
Path A (Bird re-sign, delayed trade): Utah re-signs Kessler at 5y/$156.6M/8% raises via Bird rights. Section 8(d)(iii) blocks trade until January 15, 2027 because Y1 salary exceeds 120% of prior salary. Trade fires at the February 2027 deadline at earliest. Salary matching works cleanly at $27M outgoing (no BYC) — Bird $27M + Ace + signed #2 = $49.51M out, absorbs Tatum.
-
Path B (S&T with restructured contract): Utah re-signs Kessler to a 4y/$116.4M S&T-compatible deal (5% raises max), traded immediately. Base Year Compensation cuts Kessler's outgoing salary to $13.5M for matching. Requires significant Utah filler (Konchar + Cody Williams or larger) on top of Ace + signed #2 to clear Utah's $46.57M minimum outgoing.
Cleanest path: Path A. Tatum trade fires at the 2027 trade deadline, not draft night 2026 and not July 2026. If timing demands a draft-night-2026 or summer-2026 trade, Path B works but requires filler.
2. Kessler contract assumption
Per user mission:
| Year | Salary | Raise |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-27 | $27.00M | — |
| 2027-28 | $29.16M | 8.0% |
| 2028-29 | $31.32M | 7.4% |
| 2029-30 | $33.48M | 6.9% |
| 2030-31 | $35.64M | 6.5% |
| Total | $156.60M |
This schedule is valid as a Bird re-sign by Utah (Bird raises max 8%, length max 5 years). It is NOT valid as a sign-and-trade contract — S&T max length is 4 years (+ option) and S&T raises are 5% max.
S&T-compatible alternative (if S&T path chosen):
| Year | Salary (5% raises) |
|---|---|
| 2026-27 | $27.00M |
| 2027-28 | $28.35M |
| 2028-29 | $29.77M |
| 2029-30 | $31.26M |
| Total 4y | $116.38M |
(Year 5 could be added as a player or team option.)
3. One-trade structure test (S&T variant)
If Utah signs Kessler to a 4y S&T-compatible deal and trades immediately as part of the Tatum deal, Base Year Compensation (BYC) applies:
- BYC trigger: re-sign Bird/Early Bird FA + raise > 20% + team over cap after signing = ALL satisfied.
- Utah outgoing salary FOR MATCHING = max($4.88M prior, 50% × $27M) = $13.50M.
- Boston incoming salary for matching = $27M (full new salary).
- Asymmetric.
| Mode | Utah outgoing for matching | Utah max absorb | Tatum fits? | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ST-A1: Kessler S&T + Ace + #2 rights | $23.02M | $29.03M | NO ($58.46M >> $29.03M) | not plausible |
| ST-A2: + signed #2 | $36.01M | $45.27M | NO ($58.46M > $45.27M) | not plausible |
| ST-A3: + Konchar filler ($6.17M) | $42.18M | $52.97M | NO ($58.46M > $52.97M) | not plausible |
| ST-A4: + Konchar + Sensabaugh ($2.69M) | $44.87M | $56.34M | NO ($58.46M > $56.34M) | not plausible |
| ST-A5: + Konchar + Cody Williams ($6.02M) | $48.19M | $60.49M | YES | plausible |
| ST-A6: + Konchar + Cody + Keyonte (pick rights) | $39.48M | $49.60M | NO ($58.46M > $49.60M) | not plausible |
Read: The one-trade S&T structure only works with substantial Utah filler beyond Konchar — specifically Cody Williams (or a similarly-priced contract) in addition to Konchar, plus the signed #2 pick (not pick rights).
Pick-rights mode of the S&T fails even with heavy filler. The signed #2 pick is required to bridge the BYC gap.
Practical implication: Path B's cleanest one-trade variant is Kessler S&T (4y/$116.4M / 5% raises) + Ace + signed #2 + Konchar + Cody Williams → Boston. Boston post-trade salary $190.97M, $18.03M under first apron.
4. Bird re-sign then trade (delayed trade)
If Utah signs Kessler to the user's actual proposed contract (5y/$156.6M / 8% raises via Bird rights), Section 8(d)(iii) applies: trade blocked until January 15, 2027. Trade fires at the February 2027 deadline (or later).
| Mode | Utah outgoing (no BYC) | Utah max absorb | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| BR-A1: Bird Kessler + Ace + signed #2 | $49.51M | $62.14M | plausible |
| BR-A2: Bird Kessler + Ace alone | $36.52M | $45.90M | not plausible |
Read: Bird re-sign + Ace + signed #2 is the cleanest mathematical match in the entire analysis. No filler needed. Utah outgoing $49.51M, max absorb $62.14M, Tatum's $58.46M fits with $3.68M of cushion.
The downside is timing: the trade cannot execute before 1/15/2027. The Tatum trade fires at the 2/2027 deadline, not draft night 2026 and not July 2026.
5. Two-trade structure test
The two-trade path was tested:
- Trade 1 (draft night or July 2026): Tatum out, package back excluding Kessler.
- Trade 2 (later): Kessler arrives via separate transaction.
| Mode | Utah outgoing in Trade 1 | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| T1-A: Ace + #2 + Konchar + Cody + Keyonte + Sensabaugh | $41.67M | NOT plausible (short of $46.57M minimum) |
| T1-B: same with min filler instead of Sensabaugh | $41.37M | NOT plausible |
| T2-Hauser: Standalone Kessler S&T (BOS sends Hauser + min) | BOS max in $16.81M vs Kessler $27M | NOT plausible — BOS matching fails |
| T2-TPE: Hypothetical TPE absorption | BOS post-trade $214.7M > $209M apron | NOT plausible — apron breach |
Read: The two-trade structure fails in every tested form.
- Trade 1 without Kessler/Markkanen cannot generate enough Utah outgoing salary to match Tatum. Utah doesn't have $46.57M+ of mid-tier salary outside Kessler/Markkanen/JJJ.
- Trade 2 standalone (Kessler S&T to Boston using Boston-only outgoing) cannot fit Kessler's $27M new salary into the matching room generated by Hauser ($10.85M) + min.
- TPE absorption assumes Boston has a $27M+ TPE, which is not verified in cached sources. Vucevic-for-Simons was likely simultaneous (no TPE generated). Even if a TPE existed, Kessler's $27M new salary added to Boston's $187.73M would push them to $214.73M — over the first-apron hard cap that S&T receipt triggers.
Conclusion: the two-trade structure does not work. The Tatum trade must include Kessler.
6. TPE path test
Boston's potential TPEs:
- No TPE confirmed in cached sources. The Boston cap-research agent that ran 2026-05-17 reported nothing about a Simons-Vucevic TPE. The Vucevic-for-Simons deal at the 2/5/2026 deadline was likely simultaneous (Boston was over the cap, used salary matching).
- The trade exception link on Spotrac (
/nba/transactions/exceptions) was navigated but no Boston TPE was extracted.
Conclusion: TPE path is not currently supportable from verified sources. It would also fail the apron math: Boston cannot absorb Kessler's $27M into a TPE on top of their existing $187.73M without breaching the first-apron hard cap that S&T receipt triggers ($187.73M + $27M = $214.73M > $209M).
7. Pick-rights vs signed-#2 treatment
For the Kessler-$27M-S&T structure, the signed #2 pick is the load-bearing variable for matching:
- Pick rights ($0 matching): Utah outgoing remains light, fails matching at all tested filler levels.
- Signed #2 (~$12.99M): adds the bridge needed to combine with Konchar + Cody Williams filler.
For the Bird-re-sign-then-trade structure, the signed pick is still needed (BR-A1 passes with signed pick; without it, BR-A2 fails).
Timing implication: Path B (S&T one-trade) requires the trade to happen AFTER the rookie scale signing window opens (July 6+), not on draft night. Path A (Bird re-sign + delayed trade to 2/2027) gives the #2 pick months to sign before the trade fires — trivially satisfied.
8. Filler needed
| Structure | Filler needed |
|---|---|
| One-trade S&T with $27M Kessler + Ace + signed #2 | Konchar + Cody Williams (or equivalent ~$12M+) |
| One-trade S&T with $27M Kessler + Ace + pick rights | Fails even with Konchar + Cody + Keyonte ($16M+) |
| Bird re-sign + delayed trade with $27M Kessler + Ace + signed #2 | NONE — cleanest no-filler match |
| Two-trade (Trade 1 without Kessler) | All variants fail |
9. Hard-cap and apron impact
| Path | Hard cap trigger | Boston post-trade | First apron headroom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Path A (Bird re-sign, 2/2027 trade) | No (regular trade) | $178.79M | $30.21M |
| Path B (S&T one-trade with filler ST-A5) | YES (S&T receipt) | $190.97M | $18.03M |
| Bird re-sign + Ace only (BR-A2) | No | $165.80M | $43.20M |
All workable variants leave Boston with first-apron headroom. The 125% expansion is used in Path B (Boston taking back more than sending), but Boston is well under the hard cap.
10. Practical timing
| Path | Earliest execution |
|---|---|
| Path A (Bird re-sign 5y/$156.6M/8%, delayed trade) | February 2027 trade deadline |
| Path B (S&T 4y/$116.4M/5%, one-trade) | July 6-15, 2026 after Kessler signs S&T and #2 pick signs |
| Two-trade | Does not work |
If Boston's front office wants this trade to fire before training camp 2026, Path B is the only option — but only if Utah agrees to a structurally inferior contract for Kessler (4 years vs 5, 5% raises vs 8%, total $116.4M vs $156.6M).
If both sides can wait until February 2027, Path A is far cleaner: better contract for Kessler, no filler needed, cleanest matching.
11. Recommended structure
If timing is flexible (waiting until 2/2027 is acceptable):
- Utah re-signs Kessler 5y/$156.6M with 8% raises via Bird rights in July 2026.
- Utah holds Kessler through summer and early season.
- At the February 2027 trade deadline (or after January 15, 2027), Utah trades Kessler + Ace Bailey + the player drafted with the 2026 #2 pick (now signed and on Utah's roster as a rookie) to Boston for Tatum.
- Boston ends with Kessler + Ace + a 2026 first-round rookie player on entry-level contract.
- Salary plausible. No hard cap from S&T mechanism. Cleanest structure on the board.
If draft-night or summer-2026 execution is required:
- Utah re-signs Kessler to a 4y/$116.4M sign-and-trade-compatible deal (5% raises max).
- The S&T is executed as part of the Tatum trade.
- BYC applies: Utah outgoing matching = $13.5M for Kessler.
- Required Utah filler beyond Ace + signed #2: Konchar + Cody Williams (or similar ~$12M+).
- Boston receives Kessler ($27M new) + Ace ($9.52M) + signed #2 ($12.99M) + Konchar ($6.17M) + Cody Williams ($6.02M) = $61.71M total.
- Boston sends Tatum ($58.46M).
- Boston post-trade salary $190.97M, $18.03M under first apron (hard-capped).
- Salary plausible. Structurally messier. Kessler gets a worse contract.
12. RealGM-ready explanation
The Kessler $27M scenario only works in one of two structures.
Either Utah signs Kessler to a 5-year, $156.6M Bird deal in July 2026 and waits until the 2027 trade deadline to send Kessler + Ace Bailey + the player drafted with the 2026 #2 pick to Boston for Jayson Tatum (Path A — clean, but Tatum stays in Boston through 2026 calendar year), OR Utah signs Kessler to a 4-year, ~$116M sign-and-trade-compatible deal (5% raises max) and executes the trade in July 2026 with additional filler (Konchar + Cody Williams) to overcome the Base Year Compensation penalty on Kessler's outgoing salary (Path B — works immediately, but Kessler accepts a structurally inferior contract).
The two-trade path (Trade 1 for Ace + the #2 + role players, Trade 2 for Kessler later) fails on the math because Utah cannot generate $46.57M in outgoing salary without including either Kessler or Markkanen, and a standalone Kessler S&T to Boston later cannot fit $27M of new salary into the matching room Boston has available outside the Tatum deal.
Boston ends both paths comfortably under the first apron with room to operate.
Direct answers to the questions
- Does Kessler at $27M make Kessler + Ace + #2 work for Tatum? Yes, but only with structural conditions.
- Does it work with #2 as unsigned pick rights? No, not at $27M Kessler S&T (BYC kills it). Pick must be signed in any S&T path.
- Does it work only if #2 is signed? Yes, for the S&T path. The Bird-re-sign-then-trade path at 2/2027 also requires the signed #2 (Bird path with Kessler + Ace alone fails).
- Does it require filler? Path A: no filler. Path B (one-trade S&T): yes — Konchar + Cody Williams or equivalent ~$12M+ of additional Utah outgoing salary.
- Does it require two separate trades? No. The two-trade path does not work.
- Can Kessler go into a TPE? No verified Boston TPE of sufficient size exists. Even if one did, S&T receipt + $27M on top of Boston's $187.73M would breach the first-apron hard cap.
- Is using the TPE better or worse? Worse — does not work mechanically.
- What is the cleanest legal/plausible structure? Path A (Bird re-sign in July 2026, trade at 2/2027 deadline). Path B (one-trade S&T with restructured 4y contract + filler) works only with a worse contract for Kessler.
- What should Boston still demand in future picks? Same as prior Package A analysis — for post-Achilles Tatum: 2-3 Utah unprotected firsts + 1-2 swaps. For healthy Tatum: 3+. Utah's outgoing pick capacity is constrained by the JJJ trade (2027 own + LAL 2027 protected + PHX 2031 already gone). Utah can offer 2028 own, 2030 own, plus swaps.
- Is this cleaner than the Lauri (Package B) package? Mechanically: NO — Package B (Markkanen + Ace + #2) works as a one-trade with no filler and no BYC complications. Pick-rights or signed-pick modes both pass. The Kessler scenario requires either delaying the trade to 2/2027 or accepting a one-trade S&T with restructured Kessler contract and filler. Package B is the cleaner structure mechanically. The Kessler scenario is preferred only if Utah refuses to trade Markkanen.
CBA caveats (from cba-knowledge/)
- Section 8(e)(1): S&T contract max 4 seasons (+ option), 5% raises max, first year fully guaranteed. The user's 5y/$156.6M/8% schedule does not conform.
- Section 8(d)(iii): Bird re-sign with Y1 > 120% of prior salary blocks trade until Jan 15 of cap year (or 3 months, whichever later). Applies to Path A.
- Larry Coon FAQ Q93 (Base Year Compensation): S&T re-sign with raise > 20% and team over cap after signing → outgoing salary for matching = max(prior, 50% of new). Applies to Path B.
- Article VII Section 2(e) (Hard Cap): S&T receipt hard-caps receiving team at first apron for cap year. Applies to Path B.
- Section 8 trade timing: S&T must complete within 48 hours of signing.
- Rookie scale signing window: rookies can be signed starting July 6 (moratorium end). Pick rights can be traded on draft night before signing.
Categorical labels
