3. Estimated salary years

The following salaries are projections, not verified primary-source values:

2026 #2 pick rookie scale (Boston post-trade)

Year 1 calibrated to 2025 #2 (Harper $12.37M Y1). Year 1 of 2026: ~$12,990,000. Standard rookie-scale ladder: Y1 base, Y2 +5%, Y3 +5%, Y4 +25-26%.

YearSalaryStatus
2026-27$12,990,000rookie scale Y1
2027-28$13,639,500Y2 +5% (estimate)
2028-29$14,321,475Y3 +5% (TO if Boston exercises)
2029-30$17,901,844Y4 +25% (TO if Boston exercises)

Brown extension after 2028-29

Brown's current 5y/$304M deal ends after 2028-29. He'll be 32. Likely re-signs at Bird max — modeled at ~$67M for 2029-30 (35% max, 8% raises). Heavily contingent.

Ace Bailey team options

TOs in 2027-28 ($9.98M) and 2028-29 ($12.64M) are exercised by holding team. Modeled as exercised by Boston in reset scenarios.

Markkanen 2029-30+

Contract ends after 2028-29. Modeled as departing/re-signing at market — value uncertain. Not included in 5-year totals unless re-signed (which Boston would model separately).

Minimum-salary roster filler

Each year requires 14+ roster spots. Filler estimated at $2.4M/spot × number of open spots after main contracts.

4. Cap / apron / tax projections 2026-27 through 2030-31

Verified

  • 2025-26: cap $154,647,000; tax ~$187,895,000; first apron ~$195,945,000; second apron ~$207,824,000. (Spotrac, NBA.com).
  • 2026-27: cap $165,000,000; tax ~$201,000,000; first apron $209,000,000; second apron $222,000,000. (Spotrac apron pages).

Projected (10% cap growth ceiling per CBA)

SeasonCapTaxFirst apronSecond apron
2027-28$181,500,000$221,100,000$229,900,000$244,200,000
2028-29$199,650,000$243,210,000$252,890,000$268,620,000
2029-30$219,615,000$267,531,000$278,179,000$295,482,000
2030-31$241,576,500$294,284,100$305,996,900$325,030,200

All 2027-28 onward projections assume the CBA-allowed maximum 10% annual cap growth, which has been the effective rate since the new media deal. Actual numbers may be lower in any given year; that would compress apron headroom further than these projections show.

5. CBA rules that matter most

  • Salary matching (verified): outgoing > $29M, below first apron → max incoming = 125% + $250K. Outgoing $7.5M-$29M → outgoing + $7.5M + $250K. At first apron: 100%. At second apron: 100% + no aggregation.
  • Hard cap triggers: receiving via S&T, using 125% expansion (incoming > outgoing), using BAE or Taxpayer MLE → hard-capped at first apron for the cap year.
  • Pick rights vs signed rookie: unsigned pick = $0 matching salary; signed rookie counts at face.
  • Second apron restrictions: no aggregation, no S&T, no cash, taxpayer MLE only (which itself hard-caps at second apron).
  • Frozen-pick rule: second apron in 2 of any 4 consecutive seasons freezes a future first-round pick 7 drafts out. Boston was second apron in 2024-25 only — not currently at risk.

6. Hard-cap triggers in the trade year (2026-27)

For the three-team reset (Tatum + White out, Lauri + Naz + Ace + #2 in):

  • Pick-rights mode (A1): Boston incoming $78.91M < outgoing $88.80M → no expansion → no hard cap.
  • Signed-#2 mode (B1): Boston incoming $91.90M > outgoing $88.80M → expansion → first-apron hard cap at $209M. Post-trade $190.83M, $18.17M cushion.

For the two-team Utah reset (Tatum out, Lauri + Ace + #2 in):

  • Pick-rights mode: Boston incoming $55.63M < outgoing $58.46M → no expansion → no hard cap.
  • Signed-#2 mode: Boston incoming $68.62M > outgoing $58.46M → expansion → hard cap. Post-trade $197.90M, $11.10M cushion.

7. Does pick-rights vs signed-pick timing matter after year one?

No. Once the #2 pick is signed and on Boston's roster, it counts as full salary every year regardless of which mode the trade executed in. The pick-rights vs signed-pick distinction only matters for the matching math at the moment of the trade.

For year 2 (2027-28) onward, the new Boston rookie is on his rookie-scale ladder. The trade-execution mode does not affect downstream years.

8. Assumptions about options, rookie-scale raises, minimums, roster charges

  • Tatum 2029-30 PO: modeled as exercised (he's making $71.4M, will exercise unless extends).
  • White 2028-29 PO: modeled as exercised (status-quo scenario only; he's traded out in reset scenarios).
  • Brown post-2028-29: modeled as extending at Bird max (~$67M Y1 in 2029-30) in status-quo; not modeled in reset scenarios since reset focus is on what Boston has on books.
  • Markkanen post-2028-29: modeled as UFA (max cap hold ~$79M); not extending in 5-year model.
  • Naz Reid 2029-30 PO: modeled as opted-in (most likely on $28.4M as a max-tier big).
  • Ace Bailey TOs (2027-28, 2028-29): modeled as exercised by Boston (cheap rookie scale).
  • #2 pick TOs (2028-29, 2029-30): modeled as exercised.
  • Hugo Gonzalez / Scheierman TOs: modeled as exercised by Boston (cheap rookie scale).
  • Minimum filler: estimated at $2.5M per open roster spot. Boston needs to fill to 14 standard contracts each year. Filler grows ~5%/yr with cap.
  • Roster size: 14 standard + 3 two-way assumed in all scenarios.
  • Cap holds for UFAs: when Brown becomes UFA after 2028-29, his cap hold becomes ~$73M (35% × cap) until renounced or re-signed. Modeled as re-signed in status-quo; renounced in reset scenarios.

9. What might go wrong in this analysis

  • 2027-28 onward cap is projected, not announced. Actual cap could be lower if the league misses revenue projections. That would compress all apron headroom shown.
  • Brown's post-2028-29 extension is speculative. He could be traded, extended early, or re-sign at a different price.
  • The 2026 #2 pick rookie-scale dollar is an estimate ($12.99M Y1). Spotrac chart was JS-rendered and not directly retrievable.
  • Player options are assumed exercised based on rational economics. A surprise opt-out (rare at these dollar levels) changes the picture.
  • Filler estimates use minimum salary. If Boston signs via the Taxpayer MLE or Non-Taxpayer MLE, the dollar value and hard-cap implications change.

10. Heading into modeling

Five scenarios:

  • Scenario 0: Status quo (no Tatum trade).
  • Scenario 1: Three-team reset, pick-rights execution.
  • Scenario 2: Three-team reset, signed-#2 execution.
  • Scenario 3: Two-team Utah reset.
  • Scenario 4: Lauri + Kessler + #2 reset (comparison).

Each scenario projects 2026-27 through 2030-31 with: cap usage, tax/apron position, hard-cap triggers, and roster-flexibility flags.
