BOS Cap Brief for Three-Team Trade Evaluation (BOS-WAS-UTA)

Date: 2026-06-10. Lane: NBA Intelligence Lab, consolidation + gap-fill. Companion data: data/trade_prep_20260610/bos_contracts_2025_31.csv, bos_team_cap_summary_2026_31.csv, bos_draft_assets.csv. Builder: scripts/trade_prep_20260610/build_bos_trade_prep.py (reconciliation printed on every run). Claim labels: measured = A/B-rated capture cited by file; inferred = derived from measured inputs via stated arithmetic; proxy = media report or training-era memory not independently verified in repo.

Conclusion

Boston enters summer 2026 with a clean book and a damaged asset base. The team is roughly $13.3M under the luxury tax and $21.3M under the first apron with every option exercised, holds a $27.7M traded player exception that single-handedly lets it absorb a mid-size star without sending salary, and owns its 2026 #27, 2027, 2030, 2031, and 2032 firsts. No apron restriction binds anything Boston plausibly wants to do this summer. The uncomfortable read first: the cap sheet is not the problem and never was. The problem is that the two max contracts ($115.5M combined in 2026-27) are attached to a 28-year-old eleven months removed from an Achilles rupture whose knee took away a home Game 7, and a 30-year-old who is extension-eligible July 26 with three years left. Any BOS-WAS-UTA construction is an asset-and-timeline decision, not a cap-relief decision. That conclusion held in the prior model with estimated inputs (data/bos_tatum_trade_cap_2026_31.csv) and it holds stronger with the actuals consolidated here.

1. 2025-26 season result (measured)

  • 56-26 (.683), 1st Atlantic, 2nd East. Eliminated by Philadelphia 3-4 in the first round after leading 3-1, the first blown 3-1 lead in franchise history. Evidence: data/raw/celtics_2025_26_wiki.html (capture 2026-05-17).
  • Game 7 lost 109-100 at home with Tatum ruled out (left knee stiffness). Evidence: data/raw/bos_cap_20260610/nba_tatum_knee_game7_20260610.html, nbc_roster_reset_20260610.html (captures 2026-06-10).
  • Brad Stevens won Executive of the Year despite the exit (measured, NBC capture).
  • League context as of today: the 2026 Finals are NOT decided. NYK leads SAS 2-1; Game 4 is tonight, 2026-06-10 (measured, web verification 2026-06-10). The 2026-06-10 handoff's "NYK = 2026 champ" line was a synthetic-season projection; do not cite it as a result.

2. Tatum health and contract status

Verified timeline (measured unless noted):

Contract: $58,456,566 (2026-27), $62,786,682, $67,116,798, then $71,446,914 player option for 2029-30, decision 6/29/2029 (measured, celtics_bbref_2026.txt L494, celtics_spotrac_2026.txt deadlines). Raises are the flat 8 percent-of-year-one structure; the prior model's "8% compounding" correction overstated the out-years by up to $2.2M and is superseded by the BBR actuals here. 15% trade kicker, voided while at max salary (tier B, data/trade_kickers_template_2025_26.csv; re-verification open as CAP-Q-013). No NTC found (tier B, empty data/no_trade_clauses_template_2025_26.csv). Note one unresolved discrepancy: the wiki capture says the extension was signed July 1, 2024, BBR says July 6; immaterial to money.

3. Committed salary vs thresholds, 2026-27 through 2030-31

From bos_team_cap_summary_2026_31.csv (2026-27 thresholds measured: repo B-tier, re-confirmed by 2026-06-10 web search; 2027-28+ are +10%/yr projections, tier C):

SeasonGuaranteedWith all optionsTax linevs taxvs apron 1vs apron 2
2026-27172,968,312187,730,180201,000,000-13,269,820-21,269,820-34,269,820

2030-3100294,284,100-294,284,100-305,996,900-325,030,200

The 187,730,180 with-options figure matches Spotrac's 2026-27 active roster total to the dollar (measured, celtics_spotrac_2026.txt). Excludes the Vucevic $30M Bird hold, all other holds, and 2026 draftees (#27 rookie scale roughly $2.9M, #40). 2025-26 reconciliation: the contracts file's 2025-26 column sums to exactly 189,528,566, delta 0 vs the committed BBR-reconciled compile (15 rows in data/contract_compilation_template_2025_26.csv); the two April rest-of-season conversions (Shulga, Harper Jr.) carry no BBR-listed 2025-26 amount and are 0 in that column by the same convention BBR's team total uses.

4. Which apron restrictions bind BOS in summer 2026

None at current commitments. Boston operates as an over-cap, below-tax team (inferred from the table above plus the rule text in data/raw/league_cap_2026.html, measured):

  • Full $15,049,000 non-taxpayer MLE and $5,478,000 BAE available. Using more than the taxpayer-MLE portion of the NT-MLE, or any BAE, hard-caps at the first apron ($209M); Boston has $21.3M of headroom against that cap.
  • TPE use: the $27,678,571 Simons TPE was created 2026-02-05 (prior season relative to 2026-27). Per the captured rule text, acquiring a player with a prior-season TPE hard-caps at the first apron. Workable: $187.7M committed + $21.3M of first-apron room covers the full TPE.
  • Aggregation and cash: both are second-apron triggers ($222M hard cap). Boston can aggregate salaries and send cash in a BOS-WAS-UTA structure with $34.3M of second-apron headroom.
  • Sign-and-trade acquisition: first-apron hard cap; available if needed.
  • What Boston CANNOT do is irrelevant this summer: none of the second-apron prohibitions (no aggregation, no cash out, frozen pick mechanics) apply below the apron.

5. Repeater tax status

  • 2022-23, 2023-24, 2024-25: taxpayer all three years (proxy; consistent real-world history, not independently compiled in repo; the 2024-25 second-apron position is what forced the summer 2025 teardown evidenced by the Porzingis-to-ATL and Holiday-to-POR TPEs in celtics_spotrac_2026.txt).
  • 2025-26: CONFLICT, flagged rather than resolved. The BBR cap-hit total is 189,528,566 vs the seeded 187,895,000 tax line (+1,633,566; measured inputs, inferred comparison). But the 2026-06-10 NBC capture says the deadline dumps let Boston "ultimately duck under [the] luxury tax line," and ESPN/NBC reporting at the deadline described the Simons-for-Vucevic swap as cutting the projected bill from about $39M to about $17M before the 2026-02-04/05 Boucher, Minott, and Tillman moves shed more (proxy/media). Tax team salary is not the same number as a BBR cap-hit sum (two-ways excluded, mid-season proration rules differ), so both can be true.
  • Consequence either way (inferred): with at least 3 taxpayer years in the prior 4, Boston pays repeater rates if it crosses the line in 2026-27. At $13.3M under with all options exercised, it would take an aggressive summer to get there. Every season Boston stays under starts unwinding repeater exposure.

6. Hard-cap triggers to watch (summer 2026)

  1. Using more than $6,066,000 (taxpayer-MLE portion) of the NT-MLE: hard cap $209M.
  2. Using the BAE: hard cap $209M.
  3. Acquiring via sign-and-trade: hard cap $209M.
  4. Using the Simons, Boucher, Minott, or Tillman TPEs (all created 2026-02): hard cap $209M.
  5. Taking back more than 100% in salary matching: hard cap $209M.
  6. Signing a buyout player whose prior salary exceeded the NT-MLE: hard cap $209M.
  7. Aggregating two-plus salaries out, or sending cash: hard cap $222M. All from data/raw/league_cap_2026.html (measured rule text), applied to Boston's position (inferred).

7. Clocks and deadlines

  • 2026-06-29: club option decisions on Banton ($2,801,346), Queta ($2,667,944, partial guarantee $1,333,972), Harper Jr. ($2,584,539), Shulga ($2,150,917), Williams ($2,150,917), Walsh ($2,406,205); two-way QO for Tonje ($2,185,633); Tatum 2029-30 PO is the same calendar date in 2029 (measured, Spotrac deadlines table).
  • 2026-07-20: Walsh 2026-27 fully guarantees. 2026-10-20: Queta fully guarantees opening night. 2027-01-10: Banton, Harper, Shulga, Williams guarantee dates.
  • Extensions: Brown eligible 2026-07-26; Pritchard 2026-10-01; Queta eligible now (NBC: max 4yr/$92.8M); Tatum and White windows open 2026-07-06/2027-07-06 per Spotrac (White next window 7/6/2027); Hauser 2027-07-23. Rookie options on Scheierman ($4,952,993) and Gonzalez ($3,062,640) due 2026-10-31.
  • TPE expiries: Porzingis residual $1,050,226 and Holiday $4,721,429 expire 2026-07-07; Niang $8,200,000 expires 2026-08-06 (NBC's June capture says $8.4M, Spotrac capture says $8,200,000; Spotrac figure carried); Simons $27,678,571 plus Boucher/Minott/Tillman smalls expire 2027-02-05. The Niang TPE is the one that dies before the season starts.

8. Positive and negative contracts (inferred from measured salaries)

  • Positive: Pritchard at $7.8M, Hauser at $10.8M flat through 2028-29, White at $30.3M for an All-Defense guard (the active 15% kicker adds cost to any acquiring team), Gonzalez and Scheierman on rookie scale, and six sub-$2.9M option-year bodies that are clean matching salary.
  • Negative or risk-priced: none is underwater on production alone. Tatum at $58.5M is the valuation question, not a cap problem: the money is fine if the Achilles recovery completes, and the knee episode is exactly why a trade now sells at the floor. Brown at $57.1M into his age-30 season with an extension decision on 2026-07-26 is the second timeline risk.
  • Dead money: none beyond 2025-26 (Davison $2,270,735 expires off the books).

9. What BOS plausibly seeks in a BOS-WAS-UTA trade (inferred)

  • A starting center. Vucevic is the lone UFA and the June capture calls him a near-certainty to leave; the internal depth is Queta, Garza, and Williams on minimums.
  • A young initiator or a consolidation star absorbed into the $27.7M Simons TPE without sending salary, or via aggregation with $34M of second-apron headroom. WAS holds the #1 pick and cap flexibility; UTA holds #2 (lottery 2026-05-10, measured in wiki_2026_draft.html), and UTA already receives conditional BOS seconds in 2027 and 2031, so pick plumbing between these three teams exists.
  • Tradeable firsts: 2026 #27 plus, under Stepien constraints with 2029 owed to Portland and 2028 swap-encumbered to San Antonio (kept only if it lands #1), effectively one of 2028/2030 outright and one of 2031/2033; 2032 is displayed frozen. Boston can sweeten but cannot run a Brooklyn-style pick dump.
  • The counter-default carried from the prior model (data/bos_tatum_trade_cap_2026_31.csv): any Tatum-out construction is not cap relief. Boston is a non-taxpayer with or without him in every modeled year. The only honest framing for moving a max is timeline and injury risk transfer.

10. Key risks and open items

  1. 2027-28+ thresholds are +10%/yr projections (tier C); the 2026-27 cap itself was already revised down $1M once on media revenue (web, proxy).
  2. 2025-26 final tax status unresolved (Section 5 conflict); affects repeater bookkeeping, not the 2026-27 decision space.
  3. Kicker/NTC rows are tier-B fallback pending Spotrac player-page re-verification (CAP-Q-013/014 open).
  4. Williams guarantee structure: BBR implies fully guaranteed 2026-27, Spotrac shows non-guaranteed club option; Spotrac mechanics carried.
  5. data/raw/bos_cap_20260610/espn_simons_vucevic_trade_20260610.html captured 0 bytes (failed fetch, retained as evidence per raw-data rules); the trade facts are covered by NBA.com/NBC search results and the Spotrac TPE ledger.
  6. The fresh Spotrac apron-tracker capture (spotrac_apron_tracker_2026_20260610.html) rendered nav-only (JS table); the 2026-05-17 team-page capture remains the binding apron source.
  7. Davison DOB absent from local captures; age proxied from the BBR age column.
  8. Everything dated 2026-05-17 was re-checked against 2026-06-10 web results; no roster or contract change found between capture and today. Option decisions land 6/29, draft 6/25-26: this picture has a roughly two-week shelf life.
